Radius helps bring Tyne bridge history to life through virtual reality
13 January 2025

We are excited to share the success of a recent collaboration between Radius, Esh Construction, and VR Care, which brought an innovative virtual reality (VR) experience to residents of local care homes in Newcastle and Gateshead.
The immersive VR tour, which showcases the history of the iconic Tyne Bridge, was first experienced by residents at Alexandra House Care Home in Gateshead and Orchard Mews Care Home in Benwell. Using VR headsets, participants were transported through the bridge’s history via 360-degree footage and archive content, narrated by a local TV presenter who highlighted key historical moments.
Esh Construction’s Social Value Manager, Kate Marshall, emphasised the importance of this initiative, saying: “The Tyne Bridge is approaching its 100th birthday, and this experience is a unique way for locals and visitors to connect with its rich history. Special thanks to Radius and VR Care for helping create such a valuable resource.”
Jessica Lawrence, Senior Marketing Manager for Radius’ Telecoms and IT expressed pride in Radius’ role in the project: “This initiative aligns with our mission to enrich lives through innovative technology. It’s incredible to witness how VR can create meaningful connections and bring history to life.”
As part of the restoration project, members of the public will soon have the chance to experience the VR tour at the Tyne Bridge Information Hub in Newcastle. Residential homes interested in offering bespoke sessions for their residents are encouraged to reach out via the Tyne Bridge project website.
